McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act
Crane Elementary School District is dedicated to ensuring that all children and youth attending our schools and experiencing homeless as defined under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act, have access to the public education to which they are entitled.
"Homeless children and youth” are defined as any student who lacks a “fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence.” This includes students who:
- Share the housing of others due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or a similar reason.
- Live in motels, hotels, trailer parks, or camping grounds due to lack of adequate alternative accommodations.
- Live in emergency shelters or transitional housing.
- Live in cars, campgrounds, or bus stations.
- Migratory children living in these situations are included.
Special protections also are provided for youth who are experiencing homelessness on their own, also known as unaccompanied youth – young people experiencing homelessness who are not in the physical custody of a parent or guardian.
All students identified as McKinney-Vento have the right to:
- Immediate school enrollment - Each school must immediately enroll students even if they lack health, immunization or school records, proof of guardianship, or proof of residency. This would include enrollment in the following school options:
- The school he/she attended when permanently housed (School of Origin)
- The school in which he/she was last enrolled (School of Origin)
- The school in the attendance area in which the student currently resides (School of Residency)
- Remain enrolled in his/her selected school for the duration of homelessness, or until the academic year upon which they are permanently housed.
- Equal participation - Schools must offer equal participation in tutoring programs, special education services, gifted and talented programs, before and after school programs, school-related activities, and/or other support services.
- School Uniforms
- Backpack/School Supplies
- Toiletries/Hygiene Supplies
- Community Family Assistant Information
- Transportation services to and from the student’s School of Origin
"There is one home that all homeless children and youth have in common. That home is SCHOOL"
